CHAPTER 17

Derek pulled up to Summer’s apartment. “Hold it,” he commanded before getting out. He hated for women to get their own door. His mother, the epitome of Southern grace, had taught him to never leave a lady to get her own door when he was perfectly capable of doing it for her. His father had no real manners or respect for others, especially women, but Derek thankfully had a mother who cared about raising him to be respectful of women. He sometimes wondered how she had ended up with Jack Nash.

Derek swung her door open and gave her his hand so she wouldn’t trip over the curb. For the life of him, he didn’t know how women walked in heels as high as that all day. He didn’t let go of her hand as they walked into her building and into the elevator. They both smiled at each other, and Derek guessed she was thinking about the same thing he was—their first kiss in the elevator at the Grover Hotel. His cheeks grew hot, and his chest swelled with what he could only describe as a bubble of happiness. He felt like a teenage boy again around Summer.

They were still holding hands when she slid the key into her door lock and let them into her apartment. Summer left her purse on the bar. “There’s water in the fridge if you’re thirsty,” she said as she made her way into her room to change. He sat down on the couch. Then, he stood and stuck his hands in his pockets. He wondered what she looked like undressing in there. He wandered over to the window and looked down at the street below, trying to take his mind off her nakedness. The street wasn’t very busy now that lunchtime was almost over.

“Okay,” Summer said. She had come up behind him and stood there in cropped tan pants, a flowy white top with navy polka dots, and navy flats. She looked as beautiful in casual clothes as she did in a dress in heels. “Now, I can walk comfortably around the site.”

“Definitely a must for today.” He gave her a lopsided grin but refused to offer any more hints.

Derek kept his lips sealed all the way out to Edgewood Lake. They were more than two hours early for the meetup with Sam Watson, so Derek drove them to his house. He went inside while she waited by the vehicle, and he brought out a basket and blanket. “Follow me.” He headed around to the back of the house, past the fire pit and pool, and down a deep slope toward the water’s edge. He stopped before getting to the pier and set the basket down so he could unfold and spread the blanket. The sky was cloudless, and a massive Weeping Willow shaded the spot.

Summer looked out at the still lake, the water sparkling from the bright sun overhead. The lapping water, the rustle of the leaves above them, and a few crickets chirping were the only noises they heard.
